"Let us approach the Sacrament of confession, with a new and good conscience during this holy season of Lent. Let us examine the way in which we confess our sins, not in order to be over scrupulous in analyzing our faults, but in order to recognize the greatness of man on his knees before God. Man realizes that by committing sin he has jeopardized his salvation, and he feels himself rehabilitated by the Lord's mercy, offered to us in the sacrament of Penance. Let us use this gift with understanding and compunction. In this way, God's mercy which we invoke, will once again blow over us like a beneficial breeze, alleviating our sorrows. It will arouse in us the joy of having worthily celebrated the Lenten season with the best resolutions and intentions."
(Pope Paul VI, Ash Wednesday 1968)
